What is the Newborn Intensive Care Program (NICP)?

The Newborn Intensive Care Program (NICP) is a statewide system of specialized care and follow-up for infants who need to spend time in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) because they are born to early (premature) or are sick.  The program is funded by the State of Arizona to ensure that all sick newborns in Arizona have access to the care that they need.

Financial Assistance
Community Nursing
Developmental Clinic

Who is the program available to?

The Newborn Intensive Care Program is available to Arizona residents with babies who:

Are sick when they are born, and are transported to a hospital with an intensive or special care nursery
Are born out of state and need to be transported back to Arizona for continued intensive or special care
Are sick at birth and need intensive or special care nursery for more than 72 hours
Are discharged home from a well-baby nursery in Arizona and are readmitted to an intensive or special care nursery within 96 hours of birth
Are selected by special request of a Neonatologist
Were born out of state and spent time in a newborn intensive or special care nursery, and require follow-up services after moving to Arizona

Why should I sign up for this program?

Some families do not want any of the services this program has to offer, however most families feel there are many benefits to participating in the program such as:

It can limit your family's out-of-pocket obligation if your insurance does not cover all the costs
It provides follow-up services
It eases the transition from the hospital to your home

What do the Mohave County community nurses offer?

The nurse can help you in many ways once your baby leaves the hospital.  He/She can:

Answer your questions and concerns after your baby goes home
Visit you and your baby at your home if you decide you would want that
Teach you how to help your baby grow and develop
Help with feeding and sleeping problems
Answer some of your medical questions
Provide training, special instructions and written materials as needed
Be available to call when problems arise
Give you names of services that can meet the needs of your family
Make referrals to a developmental clinic if needed
