What is CNP?

The Mohave County Community Nutrition Program is dedicated to improving the nutritional education of the community. Based on state health and nutrition data, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) has identified these significant issues regarding dietary habits and nutritional concerns for the people in Arizona: inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables, excessive fat intake, overweight, chronic diseases, anemia and food insecurity. The program has been so successful that Mohave County has been awarded an ADHS grant. Nutritional services are aimed at enlisting the participation of schools, food stores and the community.

The School-based component involves bringing the 5 a Day for Better Health curriculum to over 725 third-graders throughout the county. The goal of the program is to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables by increasing awareness of the significant health benefits of fruits and vegetables.

Of what does the "5 a Day" curriculum consist?

The "5 a Day" program consist of four nutrition lessons.  The lessons are about 45 minutes long and are taught to each 3rd grade class in the school.  The first lesson discusses Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and the importance of eating at least 5 fruits and vegetables everyday.  The second lesson covers fiber and keeping the human food tube clean.  The third lesson is a tour to the grocery store, looking for all sorts of fruits and vegetables.  The last lesson is back in the classroom discussing healthy 5 a Day snacks!
