Who is a Lay Health Worker?A Lay Health Worker is someone like yourself who receives special training to help you. She is sometimes called a Resource Mother or a Promotora. A Lay Health Worker is not medically trained but can call medical people if you need to talk to them. Your Lay Health Worker lives near you. Her life has been a lot like yours. She often is a mother and she once had the same questions you have now. She opens doors to health care and to other places that can give you help. Your Lay Health Worker visits you at home. She shows you how to care for your baby. She refers you to places you can go for help. She can teach you how to keep your family and yourself healthy. And she shares practical advice about being a parent, and helps your family to solve problems. Best of all, your Lay Health Worker is a good neighbor. She gives emotional support while you are pregnant and continues to visit for two years after your child is born. Back to Top
