What is Health Start?

The Health Start Program helps women and teens who are pregnant or who think they may be pregnant.  It is a special program with trained, experienced women called Lay Health Workers who have answers to many of your questions.

There is NO charge to you for the Health Start Program.  You do not have to pay any money to receive services from your Lay Health Worker.

Health Start works with you to:

Help you find out if you are pregnant,
Answer your questions about pregnancy and taking care of babies,
Help you find a doctor if you don't already have one,
Fill out forms and help to make appointments for AHCCCS, WIC, and other family services you decide you need,
Help you get ready for labor and delivery,
Help find a way for you to pay for your baby's birth,
Visit your home while you are pregnant, and
Visit you after your baby is born to help you, your baby, and others in your family stay healthy.

The goal of the Health Start Program is to give your child and family the best chance of success as your child grows and develops.

Who is a Lay Health Worker?

A Lay Health Worker is someone like yourself who receives special training to help you.  She is sometimes called a Resource Mother or a Promotora.  A Lay Health Worker is not medically trained but can call medical people if you need to talk to them.

Your Lay Health Worker lives near you.  Her life has been a lot like yours.  She often is a mother and she once had the same questions you have now.  She opens doors to health care and to other places that can give you help.

Your Lay Health Worker visits you at home.  She shows you how to care for your baby.  She refers you to places you can go for help.  She can teach you how to keep your family and yourself healthy.  And she shares practical advice about being a parent, and helps your family to solve problems.

Best of all, your Lay Health Worker is a good neighbor.  She gives emotional support while you are pregnant and continues to visit for two years after your child is born.

When Will My Lay Health Worker Visit Me?

Your Lay Health Worker will visit your home at least once a month while you are pregnant.

There will be at least 9 visits after you return home from the hospital.  The first visit should be before you baby is 2 weeks old.  The other visits will be when your baby is 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 24 months.  There can be more visits if you need them.

The visits to your home continue until your baby is 2 years old or until you decide to leave the program, whichever comes first.

Is What I Say Kept Confidential?
