Confidentiality:
Each client is provided a personal identification number. The ID
number is used to reference the client and is placed on the clients
specimen. Client confidentiality is of highest priority.
Testing Methods:
Serological - a blood specimen is collected and submitted to the Arizona
State Laboratory for testing.
OraSure HIV - 1Oral Specimen Collections - a swab-like device is used to
collect fluid from the mouth in only a few minuets. This specimen is also
submitted to the Arizona State Laboratory for testing.
Results:
Results are received in approximately two weeks. Results are given to
the client only and are not given over the telephone.
If a positive result is received, the client will be re-tested free of
charge. The purpose of the second test is for confirmation of the positive
result.
Partner Notification:
The Public Health Nurses have received special training from the Arizona
Department of Health Services to provide partner notification services.
If an HIV positive person feels uncomfortable discussing the positive result
with current and/or previous sexual or IV drug injection partners, the Public Health
Nurse will make contact with the partners and offer free HIV testing - names of
the infected individual are not discussed.

What is HIV and AIDS: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, AIDS,
is a disease which destroys the body's immune system, leaving a person
susceptible to life-threatening illnesses. The virus that causes AIDS is
called the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV. Symptoms of HIV may not
appear for 10 years of longer. You can be infected with HIV and still look
and feel well. Once you are infected, you always carry the virus and you
can infect others.
How do you get infected with HIV: HIV is transmitted through
blood, semen or vaginal fluid. HIV cannot be transmitted by holding hands,
hugging, kissing or sharing food and household items. The virus does not
survive outside of the body on surfaces like door knobs, toilet seats, drinking
fountains, telephones or in swimming pools. There have not been any cases
of the virus being transmitted by insects or food handlers.
How do you protect yourself from HIV: The best advice is don't
have sexual intercourse and don't shoot drugs. Having sex is a choice you
make but you should know that every time you have sex with a new partner, you
may increase your chances of being exposed to HIV and other sexually transmitted
diseases.
